Baseball is one of the most difficult sports to master. The skills required to compete at top levels in college and beyond take years to develop. The various defensive positions have their own unique skill sets that need to be learned. We believe in training players in multiple positions to maximize their chances to play when they compete with older players in college, so our players learn to play more than one position.
Longshots Baseball is committed to the year-round development of our players. We offer skill development for players who treat baseball as a primary sport. We don’t demand that players make baseball their exclusive sport (we think other sports offer great physical development opportunities that compliment baseball skills), but baseball must be a primary sport.
In addition to skill development, players are taught to respect the game. Longshots players will compete as hard, or harder, than anyone else, but there will always be respect for teammates, opponents, umpires, coaches, and everyone else involved. Anything less would be disrespecting the game of baseball. Poor sportsmanship will not be tolerated.
Younger players practice along with older players and at their specific positions. By playing with older players, the younger guys get to have live role models that they can emulate as they learn. They can see the differences between themselves and the older players and they accelerate their development towards that level and beyond. There is a huge developmental advantage for young player to play “up”.
There is also a developmental advantage for the group of older players when younger players are included in their workouts. They learn mentoring and develop leadership skills. It also helps their own skill development as they tend to take the responsibility of mentoring very seriously.
Our coaches also work very hard at developing their abilities to teach players. Coaches continually train in proper coaching techniques and drill instruction. They interact and learn from each other so that our teaching stays on track and is consistent. This philosophy is applied across the age groups so that all players benefit from the knowledge and experience of the entire staff.
